There is a difference between triglycerides and cholesterol. Triglycerides and cholesterol both belong to a group of fats, also known as lipids, which play an essential role in your body
Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood.
When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn't need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals.
If you regularly eat more calories than you burn, particularly from high-carbohydrate foods, you may have high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia).
Triglyceride levels are defined as:
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that's found in all the cells in your body. Your body needs some cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help you digest foods. Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs.
If you have too much cholesterol in your blood, it can combine with other substances in the blood to form plaque. The buildup of plaque is known as atherosclerosis. It can lead to coronary artery disease, where your coronary arteries become narrow or even blocked.
Triglyceride levels are defined as:
High carbohydrate diet and lack of exercise are major causes of very high triglycerides. Some medications and genetic factors affect the triglyceride levels.
Patients with very high triglycerides may be at higher risk for serious medical conditions.
Certain type of cholesterol,
also known as LDL-C, When it is high, patients may be at higher risk for heart attack and stroke.
Fish oil products containing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and/or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) taken have been shown to reduce triglyceride levels by at least 30% in patients with triglycerides of 500 mg/dL or greater, according to the statement published online in Circulation.
EPA-only formulations did not raise LDL cholesterol in this group, whereas combination EPA-DHA did, authors noted.
Pure EPA fish oil in particular can make miracles when it comes to your mood, heart and joints.
